DVDMS (Drugs and Vaccine Distribution Management System), or e-Aushadhi, is a software
platform and a complete Supply Chain Management System
to automate various activities of The Directorate of Health and
Family Welfare Services, Puducherry, Govt. Of Puducherry.
Benefits and main objectives of 'e-Aushadhi' are:
- To implement a transparent system for procurement, storage and distribution of quality drugs, supplies, etc. required for the hospitals at reasonable competitive price.
- To ensure adequate savings in the drug budget by scientific forecasting system based on the preparation of essential drug list and its actual consumption.
- Monitoring the budget and drug consumption pattern by introducing pass book system.
- To improve infrastructure of the existing drug ware house in district.
DVDMS Puducherry is a web based supply chain management application deals with Purchase, Inventory Management & Distribution of various drugs, sutures and surgical items to various Regional/District Drug Warehouses (DWH) of States, District Hospitals (DH), Community Health Centre (CHC) and Primary Health Centre (PHC), Sub centres to distribute drugs to patient, the final consumer of the supply chain.
This includes classification/categorization of items, codification of items, quality check of these items, etc and finally issuing drugs to the patients. Also it helps for managing receipt, Issue, Quality Control, vaccines and other health sector goods that are supplied to States under various disease control programmes.

01 Who looks after health related services in Puducherry?
The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services, Puducherry looks after Administration of its field / subordinate institutions spread all over the Union Territory. The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services functioning as the Head of the Department is assisted by Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Senior Accounts Officer (SAO), Deputy Director (Stat.), Deputy Director (Plan) to undertake the Directorate's activities and the duties and responsibilities are divided on functional basis.

02 What about the Health Care in the UT of Puducherry?
The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of four geographically isolated census districts of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam on the Eastern and Western coasts of India.
The Health care provision for the four culturally divergent districts spread over in an area of 479 Sq.Km. is a logistical challenge due to the geographical location as enclaves in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
The U.T. Govt. has been able to provide accessible and free medical care within an average distance of 1.18 kms to its population of nearly 11 lakhs through a network of 81 sub- centres, 39 PHCs, 4 CHCs, disease specific clinics and 9 hospitals. There are 32 Sub-Offices / Programme Officers under the control of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services including the Regional level offices situated at Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The Head of offices of these sub offices assist the Director in implementing the schemes in the respective region.

As per the guidelines of Government of India, Union Territory Administration is implementing various preventive health programmes such as Reproductive Child Health (RCH), including Immunizations, Family Planning, Post-partum Programme, Nutrition, Dental Health, Ayurvedha, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems of Medicine (ISM&H) as well as Disease Control Programme including AIDS, Blindness, Cholera, Filaria, Goiter, Leprosy, Malaria, STD, TB, etc.

Goals of the Health Department
The increased life expectancy of the population would necessarily increase the incidence of cancers, heart diseases, diabetics etc. The changing Socio economic scenario in the Union Territory would also result in increase in the number of deaths due to traffic accidents and accidential / sucidal poisons. Any further progress in the reduction of Crude Birth Rate (CBR), Crude Death Rate (CDR), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) would essentially require thrusts in the implementation of Reproductive and Child Health Programme including Immunization and also immediate treatment of road traffic accidents by improving and effective supervision of preventive and curative health care in the Union Territory.
